1. ATH Design Limited Edition Remco Set. Brand new in fall '99
is this set from ATH Design in Denmark. Featuring the current
version of the Remco and the first ever Remco 2000, more along
the size of the Aras. This is set #4 of 50. All are in copper
and silver, meaning a copper frame, handle, reelfoot, and spool
knob with a silver (clear) spool. It comes in a custom made Arne
Mason leather case that has the ATH logo on it and holds both
reels very snugly. These were intended as much for ATH dealers
as opposed to the general marketplace. Perhaps a few will show
up in secondary market lists, but probably not very many. RH or
LH. New from inventory. 25% off retail-$995.00.
2. Richard Kell Small Trout. Richard Kell produced, in extremely
small quantities, perhaps the finest reel to ever come from the
UK. Truthfully, it's just a simple gear/pawl reel, but is just
outstanding in its execution. A few years ago Richard had the
intention of making enough reels that I might be able to become
his North American dealer. For several reasons that never came
to fruition, which happens far more often than most of you would
ever suspect. I purchased very early on this Small Trout model
and the large Salmon/Spey reel which is later in this listing.
2.7'x0.65' and 5.6oz. It will hold a WF4F & 50yds of 20#. It features
a deep, deep gray finish, similar to early model Perfects, and
has gold anodized trim including line guard and reelfoot. It has
a double handle, rim control, full cage frame, and a quick release
spool. When you take the spool off and look at the parts inside,
you'll see work that is better than many reelmakers use on their
exterior parts. This reel is new, but has to be listed as mint+
because it is one of those that I like to fondle on occasion.
Put this on your finest rod or simply place it in a display case.
It has never been lined or been on a rod. RH or LH. $695.00. ($1800.00
for the set of two Kell reels and salmon/spey spare spool.)
3. Ari't Hart International Turbo. Very similar to the last generation
Aras, but without the canted-forward foot. The attraction to this
reel is that the frame, spool hub, and handle are plated with
24K gold. It is absolutely stunning. The spool and drag knob are
anodized in a semi-gloss black. The last time I checked only about
five of these had been made. 2.95'x0.75' and 5.4oz. It holds a
WF6F & 100yds of 20#. It is serial numbered and comes in a Benecchi
leather reel case. One of Ari's most desirable collectible reels.
Absolutely mint-LH. $1100.00.
4. Steelfin Spectra 6/7 in all black. This is a very well made
German reel with a strong synthetic disc drag. 3.00'x1.06' and
4.9oz. It will hold a WF7F & 100yds of 20#. This one comes with
a SPARE SPOOL and spool changes only require removing a coin slotted
screw. This system is secure enough that this reel could be used
for light steelhead or even saltwater fishing. I've used it once
or twice for trout and have never been disappointed. In excellent
condition. RH now, but can be converted. $295.00.
5. Mt. Rainier 3.0' Classic. This is the classic version of Monte's
reel which can be seen on my website under ÒNew Reels.' This one
has been used for one day of fishing. 3.0'x0.875' and 6.0oz. It
will hold a WF5F & 75yds of 20#. It comes with a SPARE SPOOL.
Excellent+. RH or LH. $325.00.
6. ATH Design F2 Rio Orbigo. One of the original reels from Ari't
Hart. This is one of the last of this series to come from Holland.
3.25'x0.875' and 5.6oz. It will hold a WF6F & 100yds of 20#. This
one features the very desirable black and gold finish. It's had
some honest use, but still qualifies as excellent. Currently LH,
but can be converted. SOLD.
7. Loop evotec 5eight. The original all black evotec which replaced
the Hi-Tec models a few years back. 3.35'x1.25' and 7.1oz. It
will hold a WF6F & 120yds of 20#. This one comes with a SPARE
SPOOL and is brand new from inventory with warranty card. These
have been replaced by the EvotecHD so therefore the closeout price.
Currently LH, but can be converted. With box, instruction manual,
and tool. Close to $800.00 retail. 40% off-$495.00.
8. Saracione ÒInks' #1. Only about a dozen of these were ever
made. Beautiful Gold frame with black spool. 3.25'x0.85' and 7.7oz.
This reel looks very much like the Seamaster Baby Doll Mark I.
It will hold a WF7F and 150yds of 20#. Brand New-RH or LH (only
one of each still remains.) $1200.00.
9. Saracione Saltwater Series Bonefish. The gold and black version
of the Saltwater Series was made in very limited numbers (under
20). This reel came from a customer who purchased it from me to
fish. He found it too small for the use he intended and traded
it in for another reel. The layered backplate will immediately
remind you of a Fin Nor Wedding Cake. The drag is cork and there
is an outgoing click and drag knob detents. 3.5'x1.0' and 11.1oz.
It will hold a WF7F & 150yds of 20#. There is a mark or two on
this one but you would need a magnifying glass to see them. Excellent+.
RH only. $750.00.
10. Steelfin Vario 6/9 in champagne and black. The Vario is Steelfin's
premium series and the 6/9 is quite unique. It features a spool
that holds a WF6F & 190yds of 20# and another spool that holds
a WF9F & 210yds of 20#. To switch spools just loosen a screw embedded
in the reelfoot and pull the frame apart (or push it back) and
retighten the screw. The capacity difference is in the width of
the spool and you simply are adjusting the width of the frame
to accept each spool. And it works! 3.25'x0.9' and 1.2' and 7.1oz.
The reel and the other spare spool are included and both come
in leather cases (actually a pouch for the spool.) It has been
used once or twice but is in excellent condition. RH only. $450.00.
11. Sievert 200. I usually mention this one in the copy of the
newsletter, but there was no room this time. This deal is detailed
thoroughly on my website. There are currently six reels left and
there are no spare spools. 3.6'x0.875' and 10.6oz. It will hold
a WF9F & 225yds of 20#. Dual-mode reels are the best of both worlds.
See FAQS on my website if you are unsure of their benefits. RH
or LH. Brand new from inventory with warranty cards. Originally
$750.00. NOW $400.00.
12. Charlton 8500SST 0.8. It is rare indeed to find any Charlton
reel for sale used. Even eBay only has one on a fairly rare basis.
I bought this reel from Jack from the very first batch of titaniums
he ever produced (yes, SST stands for Signature Series Titanium).
The reel was made back when Jack was still using cork in his unique
drag system. That alone makes this a collectible. Very few Ti
reels were ever done and it's looking less and less likely that
Charlton will be making any in the future . This features the
reel and 3 SPARE SPOOLS in the best selling size for 8500 series
reels. 3.75'x0.8' and 13.6oz. It'll hold a WF8F & 240yds of 20#
or a WF9F & 200yds of 20#. I've caught several bonefish with this
reel, but you'd be hard pressed to show that it's ever been used.
The titanium alloy that Jack uses makes a reel of incredible hardness,
and I doubt you could put a scratch or mark on one with anything
less than a diamond. The reel and spools also feature the original
reel valises in which I received them. They are extremely well
done. The price on this is well below what the current retail
would be if the reels were even being made. Excellent+ condition.
RH only. $8995.00.
13. LH Design Zircon AL. For years LH Design made reels only
in titanium. They featured a fine anti-reverse reel with a large
cork disc drag that was beautiful to look at and outstanding to
fish with. A couple of years ago Leen decided to make essentially
the same reel in aluminum. 3.54'x1.18'. The reel only weighs 8.8
oz but will hold a WF10F and over 225yds of 30# and has only ELEVEN
total parts. I caught a fifty pound tarpon in the Glades on mine
last May and it performed flawlessly. Probably because the Europeans
have always been fascinated with nickel coating on fly reels,
Leen did a very small run of nickel plated Zircon AL reels. I
brought one in to see what it looked like. It has a satiny silver
finish to it. If you do most of your fishing in freshwater and
only occasionally do the saltwater thing this might be the reel
for you. Nickel plating is not saltwater proof, but with reasonable
care these should survive the occasional saltwater use. This is
brand new and RH only. $550.00.
14. Tibor Riptide. The all black version of this popular reel.
4'x1.5' and 9.5oz. It will hold a WF10F & 200yds of 30#. This
one comes with the original box, reelcase, and instruction manual.
It's in excellent condition.. LH only (can be changed to RH for
a fee by Tibor.) $395.00.
15. Fin-Nor FR12DD. The current Fin-Nor large arbor reel in beautiful
Fin-Nor gold. This reel is set up for LH retrieve and has the
aluminum spool cap rather than the wooden version used for awhile.
The wooden one flew off at periodic intervals so this is definitely
the better way to go. 4.5'x1.25' and 11.3oz. It'll hold a WF12F
& 300yds of 30#. It's in excellent condition. SOLD.
16. Richard Kell Salmon/Spey. Richard Kell produces, in extremely
small quantities, perhaps the finest reel to ever come from the
I purchased very early on this Salmon/Spey model
and the Small Trout reel which is earlier in this listing. 4.45'x1.1'
and 18.5oz. It will hold a DT11F & 200yds of 30#. It features
a deep, deep gray finish, similar to early model Perfects, and
has gold anodized trim including line guard and reelfoot. It has
a double handle, rim control, full cage frame, and a quick release
spool. When you take the spool off and look at the parts inside,
you'll see work that is better than many reelmakers use on their
exterior parts. It also comes with a SPARE SPOOL. This reel is
new, but has to be listed as mint+ because it is one of those
that I like to fondle on occasion. Put this on your finest speyrod
or simply place it in a display case. It has never been lined
or been on a rod. RH or LH. $1400.00. ($1800.00 for the set of
two Kell reels and this spare spool.)
17. Hayden Broadbill Direct Drive. The original Hayden Broadbill.
In fact its serial number is a single digit. 4.3'x1.1' and 14.7oz.
It will hold a WF12F & 350yds of 30#. Features a double disc drag,
one on each side of the spool, with cork bearing against graphite
impregnated Teflon. It is one of the finest saltwater fly reel
drags on the market. The drag adjustment is on the handle side
and is a large fluted knob. It features a large wooden handle
with a reverse flare and it also has a machined titanium reelfoot.
This will make a terrific tarpon reel or could easily be used
for Pacific Sails and other pelagic species usually sought with
13-15 weight rods. It comes with the original neoprene reelcase,
wooden box, grease container, and disassembly tool. Reel has been
lined but never used. Excellent+. RH only. $425.00.
18. Mt. Rainier Magnum I. Heading out for some bluewater fly
fishing? Monte Schroeder designed this reel back in the mid-90's.
He originally made several sizes but eventually realized that
just two would do the job. The last run of these was given a black
anodizing because black holds up better to rugged use. 4.375'x2.125'
and 24oz. It will hold a shooting head, running line, and around
500yds of 30# backing. Like all of Monte's reels, it is an anti-reverse.
Bluewater fishing is one place where anti-reverse makes a lot
of sense. There are two of these left and they are new. RH or
LH. 40% off the original $900.00 price. $550.00.
19. Mt. Rainier Magnum II. Heading out for some bluewater fly
fishing? Monte Schroeder designed this reel back in the mid-90's.
He originally made several sizes but eventually realized that
just two would do the job. The last run of these was given a black
anodizing because black holds up better to rugged use. 4.750'x2.125'
and 34oz. It will hold a shooting head, running line, and around
800yds of 30# backing. Like all of Monte's reels, it is an anti-reverse.
Bluewater fishing is one place where anti-reverse makes a lot
of sense. There are two of these left and they are new. I previously
thought that this model was sold out, but I misunderstood Monte
on this. So if you were one who was disappointed when told these
were gone, here's your chance! RH or LH. 50% off the original
$1100.00 price. $550.00.
20. Bo Mohlin Limited Edition Dual-mode Big Game Fly Reel. Bo
made only five of these a few years ago. I kept one for my collection
and one to fish. 5.375'x1.2' and 17oz. It has monstrous capacity,
something like a WF15S Mastery Billfish line with 300yds of 30#
and 300yds of 50# Power-Pro GSP. The drag is a huge chunk of cork
and has at least 10lb of drag pressure possible. The drag knob
is on the handle side which is where it should be on any reel
where the handle doesn't spin. It does not have rim control. Features
high gloss black/gold anodizing. All Bo Mohlin reels come with
a hard leather case of the Hardy style and are probably worth
$250.00 by themselves, especially as large as this is. These were
designed to sell for $2000.00 new partly due to the fact that
only five were made. Mint. RH only. $1100.00. (See Dual-mode under
FAQS on my website.)
21. Bo Mohlin Limited Edition Single Action Big Game Fly Reel.
Single action in Europe is what we refer to as direct drive over
here. Only five of these were made. 4.7'x1.65' and only 12.7oz.
Due to their increased width compared to the Dual-modes above,
they have about the same capacity. Though this was never lined
per se, I did try to see what its capacity was. I got a DT12F
120 meter line on it and ran out of backing at 500yds of 30# and
still had room for more. If you're looking for a large sized spey
reel this one will fit the bill. The drag knob is on the handle
side, which is convenient, but is not for those who constantly
fiddle with the drag adjustment when pursuing large fish. If you
can set your drag and pretty much leave it alone you'll be all
right. The drag is a huge chunk of cork. This is in Bo's famous
gun metal blue anodizing and looks terrific. It does not have
rim control. All Bo Mohlin reels feature a hard leather case of
the Hardy style that would be worth at least $250.00 by itself.
This reel is in excellent+ condition. Intended to sell for around
$2000.00 (they were all sold before Bo ever cataloged them). RH
only. $950.00.
22. Steelfin Abyss. A large (and I mean large) arbor reel for
bluewater fishing. The arbor alone is over three inches. 5.750'x1.420'
and 31.75oz. It will hold a shooting head, running line and about
900yds of 50# Power Pro or similar gel-spun backing. I purchased
this reel as a direct drive model to do marlin and large tuna.
Unfortunately, my present health situation will not again allow
me to pursue these fish. At least not intentionally. If one shows
up while I'm after sailfish or dorado I'll certainly throw to
it, but I've decided that rigging up specifically for them is
foolish. The drag is a multi-disc carbon fibre version that is
very strong and smooth. It features both a drag knob and a lever.
Set the drag for the absolute maximum you want and use the coin-slotted
large screw to pin the knob there. Use the lever to back off the
drag completely (for stripping out line, etc. ) or to temporarily
decrease drag pressure when a fish sounds. I truly believe this
is the finest big game direct drive reel on the market. I would
easily choose this over an Abel #5, Pate Bluefin, or Tibor Pacific.
It has rim control and an extension arm that places the reel under
your casting hand to provide better balance. This particular reel
was rigged up for fishing by me, but has never left the house!
It cannot be sold as new or even mint, but it really does qualify
for the excellent label as I've found only one or two tiny marks
on it. RH only. 40% off the current retail. $850.00.
23. Steelfin Abyss. Same reel as above except absolutely mint.
RH only. 25%+ off retail. $995.00.
MISC. GEAR FOR SALE
24. Phillipson Bamboo, 2/1, 7', 4 3/4oz. Spinning or spin/fly,
this rod is all original except the wraps which were redone professionally
with the correct colors-a very nice job. Other than the cork showing
some use, the rod is in excellent condition. No bag or tube. $275.00.
25. Peter McVey Bamboo, 2/1, 7 1/2', 4-5 weight. This is hollow
built and is a terrific trout rod. Features beautiful workmanship.
New. $825.00.
26. Bellinger Bamboo rod with Nickel/Silver reel. 7' 3 weight
2/2 in gorgeous Arne Mason rod case. These are Al's own rods which
he quit making several years ago. It casts wonderfully without
that typical slow action of many older cane rods. This one has
a nice crisp action. I used a Cortland 444 Spring Creek WF3F line
on it and also cast it with the TT3/4 from Wulff. It features
a gorgeous Bellinger reelseat with N/S slip rings and deeply figured
walnut for the insert. The reel is the 2.5' ÒMidge' Bellinger/
Saracione Nickel/Silver that were sold out several year ago. 2.5'x0.656'
and 4.2 oz. It holds a DT2F & 25yds of 20# or a short WF3F and
about 40yds of 20#. It also includes the optional Arne Mason hard
leather reelcase. The serial numbers on the two pieces match and
are in the two digit range. This combo was used for a half day
of fishing a year or so ago and is in excellent+ condition. If
available today, these would retail for about $3000.00. Both are
outstanding examples of American craftsmanship and fairly priced
at SOLD.
27. Thomas & Thomas SC 908S. A two-piece rod with the extremely
smooth SC action. 9' for an 8 weight and with a handle that has
been slimmed down for a woman's hand or perhaps for a younger
male. The rod has been test cast but never fished. Comes complete
with the original T&T rod sock and tube. 30% off. $370.00.
28. Scott ARC 10' 7 weight. 10' 7 weight four piece rod in the
high end ARC series. These are wonderfully smooth rods which make
for great steelhead and Atlantic salmon fishing, especially for
grilse. It would also make a fine smallmouth rod or even a rod
to wade the bonefish flats during reasonably calm days. This rod
has seen moderate use. $250.00.
29. Loop Blue Series-Salt. 9' 11/12 weight/3 piece The current
Blue Series rod in the salt water version. This rod is a cannon
which casts a twelve better than an eleven in my experience. Comes
with the original sock and tube. Has been lawn cast and taken
along on trips, but has actually never been fished. $200.00.
30. Hardy Deluxe Classic 15' 10weight Spey. This is a high-end
graphite Hardy Spey rod featuring nickel/silver reel fittings
and butt, plus a wood spacer in the reelseat. The blank is a burgundy
color with ruby guidewraps and scarlet accents. I would describe
this action as medium/progressive. It comes in a Cordura covered
rod tube with a heavy duty rod sock. A few years ago this was
the top rod in the Hardy lineup. If available today, the retail
price would be close to $1000.00. It has received only moderate
use. $500.00.
31. Lamiglass 11' 7-8 weight/3 piece. A very powerful rod from
IM700 graphite. Definitely designed for overhead casting. The
rod shows very little sign of use. Has the original bag but no
tube. $325.00.
32. Scott ARC 11'9' 6 weight/4 piece. Sometimes referred to as
a Òthree-handed rod' due to the fact that it can easily be used
both single-handed and double-handed. It appears to have been
barely used and comes with the original sock but no tube. The
ARC is one of the top rod lines that Scott makes. This would be
a terrific rod for long line nymphing or for grilse or small steelhead.
$350.00.
33. Diamondback 14' 8/9 speyrod BLANK. 3-piece with sleeve ferrules.
Included are the right number of titanium guides and a Fuji graphite
reelseat. Finished rod goes for over $600.00. New. $175.00.
34. Various spare spools. All new unless otherwise noted. Add
$4.00 shipping.
A. Loomis Syncrotech 3-4-5 $75.00
B. Ryall #2 Palm Rim (NOT Jr. ) $40.00
C. STH Disc Drag 789 (appears to have been lined at one time)
$20.00
D. Fenwick World Class II $20.00
E. Scientific Anglers System II LC 45 $10.00
F. Abel TR2 $75.00
G. Abel Super 5-Black ÒCoral'-$150.00
35. HMH Spartan vise. A compact version of the original HMH vise.
Comes with the Omni jaw which holds a wide range of hook sizes.
This one has the 3 lb black pedestal. This new version of the
Spartan now has jaws that are interchangeable with the Standard
HMH model. It features uninterrupted 360 degree rotation. The
tying angle is also adjustable. It comes in the HMH Cordura tyer's
bag which will hold a lot of tools and materials. I won this by
releasing a salmon on the Restigouche this summer, but I have
four other vises and rarely find time to do much tying any more.
It is absolutely new and 25% off. $115.00.
36. LATE ARRIVAL: Thomas & Thomas Vector 9' 5 weight 3 piece.
An absolutely unused rod at almost half price. Vectors have a
sweet progressive action that is perfect for this line weight.
A pro rod without a warranty card, it nevertheless has the original
sock and tube. Not even lawn cast. $395.00.
37. LATE ARRIVAL: Sage RPLXi 9' 8 weight 3 piece. Probably the
most popular bonefish rod on the planet, it also makes a fine
salmon/steelhead stick. This one appears unused and has the blank
warranty card with it. These things seem to sell fast no matter
what price I ask for them, but I won't be greedy. $395.00.
Please note that I received word that some Hollander reels and
Saracione original Monarch reels were being shipped to me for
inclusion in this newsletter. Unfortunately, they did not arrive
in time to be specifically described. The Monarch is supposed
to be the Bonefish size and I believe Hollander only made one
size of his reel, which was about a seven weight. I know more
sizes were planned, but I don't think they were ever made. Feel
free to call or e-mail me if these might be of interest to you.
They'll also be featured, probably as ÒLate Arrivals,' on the
Misc./Used page on my website. .
